Background of the Study
Medication adherence is crucial in the management of chronic and infectious diseases, yet many patients struggle with maintaining proper adherence due to forgetfulness, lack of awareness, or misconceptions about treatment (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, including Zamfara State, poor medication adherence has been linked to treatment failures, increased disease burden, and higher healthcare costs (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
With the increasing penetration of mobile phones, SMS-based health education programs have emerged as a promising intervention for improving medication adherence. These programs provide timely reminders, educational messages, and motivational support to patients, ensuring they take their medications as prescribed (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). However, the effectiveness of SMS-based interventions in improving medication adherence in Zamfara State has not been extensively studied.
Statement of the Problem
Non-adherence to medication remains a critical challenge in managing diseases in Zamfara State, leading to increased hospitalizations and complications (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024). While SMS-based health education programs have been introduced to address this issue, their effectiveness in enhancing medication adherence remains unclear.
This study assesses the impact of SMS-based health education on medication adherence, examining its effectiveness in reducing missed doses and improving treatment outcomes in Zamfara State.
