Background of the Study

Medication adherence is crucial in the management of chronic and infectious diseases, yet many patients struggle with maintaining proper adherence due to forgetfulness, lack of awareness, or misconceptions about treatment (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, including Zamfara State, poor medication adherence has been linked to treatment failures, increased disease burden, and higher healthcare costs (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

With the increasing penetration of mobile phones, SMS-based health education programs have emerged as a promising intervention for improving medication adherence. These programs provide timely reminders, educational messages, and motivational support to patients, ensuring they take their medications as prescribed (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). However, the effectiveness of SMS-based interventions in improving medication adherence in Zamfara State has not been extensively studied.

Statement of the Problem

Non-adherence to medication remains a critical challenge in managing diseases in Zamfara State, leading to increased hospitalizations and complications (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024). While SMS-based health education programs have been introduced to address this issue, their effectiveness in enhancing medication adherence remains unclear.

This study assesses the impact of SMS-based health education on medication adherence, examining its effectiveness in reducing missed doses and improving treatment outcomes in Zamfara State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of medication adherence among patients in Zamfara State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of SMS-based health education programs in improving medication adherence.
  3. To identify barriers to the successful implementation of SMS-based health interventions.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of medication adherence among patients in Zamfara State?
  2. How effective are SMS-based health education programs in improving adherence?
  3. What barriers affect the success of SMS-based medication adherence interventions?

Research Hypotheses

  1. SMS-based health education has no significant impact on medication adherence.
  2. There is no significant relationship between SMS reminders and reduced missed medication doses.
  3. Barriers to SMS-based health education do not significantly affect its effectiveness in improving medication adherence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on patients in Zamfara State receiving SMS-based health education for medication adherence. Limitations include variability in mobile phone access, network coverage, and patient engagement with SMS messages.

Definitions of Terms

  • Medication Adherence: The degree to which patients take medications as prescribed by healthcare providers.
  • SMS-Based Health Education: The use of text messaging to provide health information and reminders.
  • Treatment Compliance: Following prescribed medical regimens to achieve desired health outcomes.
